How we SPY ...

1. 1. Blend in, and get to know your surroundings. The more familiar with the area you are, the more it can help you. Be aware of the people around you, what their schedules are, and when and where they will be at certain times. Above all, don't stand out. A bad spy hides, a good spy blends.

      The way you dress is very important. Dress the way everyone else does. If the people around you are wearing a suit and tie, you do the same. If the people are wearing shorts and a collar shirt, you wear shorts and a collar shirt, but don't wear the same exact clothing as the people around you. Be distinct, but don't be too distinct. This goes back to the first step, telling you about standing out.

      If there is an item you need to obtain in order to gain information, take it but leave as little a trace as possible. You really have to think about these things. If you see that the person you are watching leaves the room or office, slip in casually. Shut the door behind you. Make sure no one sees you do this. Take what you need and leave. Be sure not to move anything around. This could raise suspicion. Leave everything as it was when you stepped in. If what you want is buried under stuff, make a mental note of what it looked like before you touch anything. After obtaining the item, adjust the surroundings to make it look like nothing was touched.

      If you are following someone, try not to be seen. Keep your distance, but don't lose sight of them. Its best if you wait five seconds then follow them/ if they go around a corner don't hurry your steps. It could raise suspicion. Also, when you turn the corner, be careful, a baseball bat might be awaiting your head. Keep in mind that no one is watching your every move, and will not recognize that you are spying on someone. Take note of everyone the person you are watching talks to. Write a small description of him/her in a small book, if you are carrying one at hand. If you can overhear a conversation between this person, write down the topics brought up during the talk.

      If your cover could easily be blown, manipulate your appearance. Grow facial hair, grow or cut your hair, shave your arms/legs, use a different clothing palette, wear/stop wearing sunglasses. Wigs can be a good alternative when time is small. Also try using a fake accent, modulate your voice, and go places you normally don't. (Note: If you are going to use a fake accent, please make sure that it actually sounds similar to the real one; some fake accents sound completely fake and could get your cover blown.)

      If necessary, pretend to join the target's(the one you're spying on)'s side. When you're doing this, it's called being a double agent. A double agent is someone who pretends to be on their target's side, while finding information about the individual in question.

      Before you spy on someone, make sure that the reason you're spying on them makes sense. If it's because they don't have any friends, don't spy on them, if they are friends with everyone, maybe you should spy.

      Spying can be done without fancy gadgets and guns, as long as you are informed on the rabbit (person being followed), know the surrounding area, and avoid attention at all costs.

      Pretend to do something other than spying. Talking with your friend or sending a message from your phone can be very good idea. However, make sure that your phone is on sleep mode, or silent mode, etc. Vibrate is recommended for emergencies.

   • If your target is potentially dangerous, have some sort of backup and make sure you know how to handle whatever they might throw at you.
   • Try to read lips and understand conversation without hearing it being spoken. Practice with your friends before you get into real spying, or, put a movie on mute and guess what the characters are saying.
   • If you are assuming an identity, make sure you figure out who you are going to be so you know how to respond to any questions or comments.
   • Have all your equipment and put it in a place where you can get it fast.
   • Try to guess the next step of your target and work accordingly.
   • Bring a book, newspaper, etc, so if the person you are following sits down, you sit down and pretend to read. However, also be especially subtle while doing this.
   • Try to crouch-walk. It maximizes stealth. Also, walk from heel to toe; it’s virtually soundless!
   • Don’t take a video camera. If the cops find that on you with a video of you sabotaging the target’s garden, good luck coming home that night. Try picture cell phones, but be especially discreet.
   • If you are more than three feet (1 metre) away, sidestep and run away in a zig-zag shape.
